Wanderley de Souza

Wanderley de Souza was born on January 13, 1951, in the State of Bahia, to Ismael de Souza and Arani Santos Souza. 

He graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1974, and since the very onset of his medical education, dedicated himself to studying the cell organization of pathogenic protozoa. 

Two years later, in 1976, Dr. Souza completed a Master’s degree at the UFRJ Institute of Biophysics, after successfully defending a final paper named “Ultrastructural Study of Microtubules in Trypanosoma cruzi and Herpetomonas sp,” followed by a Ph.D. from the same institution, upon submitting a doctoral thesis titled “Ultrastructural, Cytochemical, and Freeze-fracture Study of the Cell Surface of Trypsanosoma cruzi.”

As a researcher, Dr. Souza conducted studies at the National Polytechnic Institute of Mexico (IPN), as well as at the University of Colorado and the Washington University in St. Louis, both of them in the United States, in addition to the University of Glasgow in Scotland.

Among the several positions that the renowned physician and academician currently holds, he has served as a Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UFRJ) Institute of Biophysics Carlos Chagas Filho since 1993. The following year, he was appointed as a Full Professor at the State University of the North Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro’s (UENF) Biosciences and Biotechnology Center. 

Souza additionally performed administrative duties as Associate Dean and Dean of UENF’s Institute of Biophysics as well as being appointed Dean of the institution.

When it comes to medical society memberships, Dr. Souza belongs to the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS); Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC); New York Academy of Sciences (ABC) (since 1987); and the International Cell Research Organization (since 1988), in addition to holding the title of Corresponding Member of the Buenos Aires National Academy of Medicine in Argentina.

The acclaimed doctor also collaborates as an editorial staff member of several publications, namely the Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology; Journal of Protozoology; Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology; Biocell; Acta Microscópica; and the Memories of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute medical journals.  

Throughout his career, Dr. Souza has served as an advisor to Brazil’s main research funding agencies, such as CNPq, Capes, Faperj, Fapesp and FAP-DF, and in 2015, led Finep, a state-run organization tasked with fostering science and technology in the country. 

Moreover, he is a Project Director at the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (INMETRO) and Head of the Hertha Meyer Cellular Ultrastructure Laboratory (LUCHM). 

Dr. Souza holds experience in the field of Parasitology, focusing particularly on Animal Parasitic Protozoology and working on the topics of Trypanosoma cruzi, Tritrichomonas foetus, Toxoplasma gondii, T. cruzi and Herpetomonas samuelpessoai.

Some of the many accolades he has amassed as a result of his significant contributions to medicine include the Young Scientist Award from the city of Santos in 1980; Manoel Noriega Moralez award granted by the Organization of American States (OAS) in 1987; and the Sendas Health award in 1991.

The physician and scholar has penned over 340 articles in medical journals, and from 2003 to 2004, was appointed as the Executive Secretary of both Brazil’s Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Order of Scientific Merit. Finally, he served as the Rio de Janeiro State Secretary of Health, Technology, and Innovation.

During his candidacy for a Full Member position at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Wanderley de Souza submitted a paper by the name of “The Protozoan-Host Cell Interaction as Cellular Recognition: Trypanosoma and Toxoplasma gondii as Experimental Models.”
