José Hermógenes Rocco Suassuna

The son of Ivone Rocco Suassuna and Ítalo Suassuna, José Hermógenes Rocco Suassuna was born on June 11, 1957, in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

He graduated in Medicine from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 1988 and later on, in 1987, obtained a Master’s degree in Medicine (Nephrology) from the same institution. In addition, he was granted a Fellowship to study in a program sponsored by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN), offered at Guys Hospital in London, England, from 1987 to 1989, followed by a Ph.D. in Sciences (Microbiology and Immunology) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1996. 

Dr. Suassuna worked as an intensive care doctor at the municipality of Nova Iguaçu General Hospital from 1982 to 1984, Brazilian Army Central Hospital between 1983 and 1987, and the Federal Fluminense University’s (UFF) Antônio Pedro University Hospital from 1983 until his retirement in 2017. 

After passing two diploma-based public admissions exams, he started working as a Lecturer at UFF’s Department of Internal Medicine, a position he held from November 1984 to July 1989, and as an Adjunct Professor of Nephrology at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) Faculty of Medical Sciences from April 1998 through November 2004. He also occupied the position of Coordinator of the Nephrology subject taught at UERJ’s Faculty of Medical Sciences from 2005 to 2017. 

Currently, Dr. Suassuna serves as a Full Professor of Nephrology at the aforementioned institution since December 2004 and as Coordinator of the nephrology-specialized Unidade Docente-Assistencial (Teaching and Clinical Unit – UDA) at Pedro Ernesto University Hospital (HUPE-UFRJ) since 2005. 

Dr. Suassuna has been a permanent faculty member of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) Faculty of Medical Sciences’ postgraduate program in Medical Sciences (PGCM) since 2002. 

When it comes to academia, the esteemed nephrologist currently serves as an Associate Editor at the Brazilian Journal of Nephrology (JBN) and has 68 publications under his name, with an additional 430 personal citations in Google Scholar. Furthermore, he has penned twenty-five book chapters in the fields of Nephrology and Intensive Care Medicine. 

Dr. Suassuna is a Member of numerous associations, namely the Brazilian Society of Nephrology, of which he also serves as Regional Vice-President since 2015; Brazilian Society of Intensive Care (Sobrati); Brazilian Organ Transplant Association; International Society of Nephrology; and the American Society of Nephrology. To further add to his extensive resume, he also holds membership to the European Renal Association/European Dialysis and Transplant Association and has belonged to the International Society of Nephrology’s Committee for Kidney Health in Disadvantaged Populations (CKHDP) since 2007.

In his submission for a Full Member position at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. José Hermógenes Rocco Suassuna presented a paper titled “D-Day Model: Forecasting Lethality Rates in Patients with Severe Acute Kidney Injury on the Day of Decision for Artificial Kidney Support.”
