José Barbosa de Medeiros Gomes Filho

The son of José Barbosa de Medeiros Gomes and Lúcia Morandi Barbosa de Medeiros Gomes, José Barbosa de Medeiros Gomes Filho was born on April 6, 1933, in the city of Juiz de Fora in the State of Minas Gerais. 

He graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1959. Afterwards, he went on to complete doctorate programs in Internal Medicine at UFRJ in 1962 and in Medical Sciences at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 1970. 

Gomes Filho has held the position of Associate Professor of Cardiology at the State University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UERJ) Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) since 1970, and after passing a public examination, has served as a Full Professor of Cardiology at UERJ since 1985. His main area of expertise is in the field of Cardiology and Internal Medicine, with a focus on the subjects of pulmonary hypertension, mitral regurgitation, and hemodynamics. 

Furthermore, the lauded physician occupied the role of Head of the Hemodynamics and Coronary Angiography Division of the State University of Rio de Janeiro’s Hospital das Clínicas university hospital complex up to 1977, and from 1979 onwards, took on the position of Head of the Echocardiography Division at the same institution.  

Dr. Gomes Filho is a Member of the Rio de Janeiro Society of Cardiology, where he served as Vice-President from 1978 to 1980, and as 2nd Secretary from 1963 to 1966. Moreover, he composes the Society of Interventional Cardiology, where he carried out the duties of Treasurer from 1976 to 1978, in addition to being a Founding Member of the Rio de Janeiro Academy of Medicine and Surgery, where he holds patronship of Chair Number 5. 

In 2010, Dr. Gomes Filho was honored with the title of Retired Physician by the State of Rio de Janeiro Regional Council of Medicine. 

As a scholar, he has published nearly 150 articles in Brazilian as well as foreign medical journals, written two books, five original thesis and 17 book chapters. Also, he mentored several Master’s and Ph.D. students and took part in numerous examination boards.  

In recognition for his invaluable contributions to medicine, the physician and scholar has been bestowed a number of medals and honors, in addition to having received the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM)-granted Alfred Jurzykowski distinction.

In his submission for a Full Member seat at the ANM, Dr. José Barbosa de Medeiros Gomes Filho presented an essay titled “Contribution of the Left Ventricular Radius/Thickness Ratio Index for the Functional and Prognostic Assessment of Heart Diseases in Clinical Practice.”
