Samir Rasslan was born on April 5, 1944, in the city of Dourados in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul.
In 1968, he graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Santa Casa de São Paulo and later went on to pursue a medical residency in General Surgery in 1969, 1970, and 1971, also from the aforementioned institution’s hospital complex. In 1977, in turn, Rasslan earned a Master’s degree in Medicine from the Paulista School of Medicine of the Federal University of São Paulo (EPM/Unifesp), followed, the next year, by a Doctor of Medicine degree conferred by the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Santa Casa de São Paulo.
In 1982, after passing a public, college admissions exam, the physician was awarded the prestigious title of Associate Professor of General Surgery at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the State University of Campinas (Unicamp).
Dr. Rasslan held two positions at the Department of Surgery of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Santa Casa de São Paulo: the first one, from 1982 to 1991, as an Associate Professor; and the second as a Full Professor, from 1982 to 1991, after being approved in another diploma-based admissions exam.
The physician would then pass another public enrollment test, this time to work as a Full Professor at the University of São Paulo (USP) Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Surgery, a position he held from 2005 to 2014. Currently, Dr. Rasslan fulfills the role of Senior Full Professor there, to which he was elected in 2015.
The recognized physician served as Head of the Santa Casa de São Paulo Emergency Room from 1990 to 2004, and as President of the aforementioned institution’s Faculty of Medical Sciences’ Postgraduate Committee from 1996-2003. It was at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine (FMUSP), however, that Dr. Rasslan amassed several positions.
There, he was appointed as Supervisor of the General and Trauma Surgery Residency Program from 2006 to 2014; Vice-President of the Central Institute’s Board of Directors at the college’s university hospital complex from 2007 to 2010; Head of the III Surgical Clinic Department (General Surgery + Emergency); and Head of the Department of Surgery from 2009 to 2013.
As a tribute to Dr. Rasslan’s significant contributions to medicine, he has been honored with numerous titles and accolades, including Full Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC); Honorary Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma; Member of the Brazilian Society of Integrated Trauma Care (SBAIT); and Member of the Panamerican Trauma Society.
Moreover, Rasslan was awarded Honorary Memberships to three societies, namely the Peruvian General Surgery Society, Colombian Association of Surgery, and the Brazilian Air Force, in addition to composing the Surgical Infection Society of Latin America (SIS-LA).
The lauded physician was further acknowledged with the title of Master of the São Paulo Branch of the Brazilian College of Surgeons from 1989-1991; President of the National Board of the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC) from 1995 to 1997; and since 1995 has served as a Member of the CBC Higher Council.
He was additionally appointed as Vice-President of the Brazilian Society of Integrated Trauma Care (SBAIT) from 1999 to 2002; President of the Panamerican Trauma Society from 2003 to 2004; and Governor of the Brazilian Branch of the American College of Surgeons for the 2008-2013 term.
In addition, medical students have picked Dr. Rasslan to be their Honored Professor numerous times, as well as their Class Sponsor and Patron. In his hometown of Dourados, he was bestowed the accolade of Distinguished Member, in recognition of the healthcare services he has provided to the community.
Furthermore, the General Command of the Brazilian Air Force granted Rasslan the National Order of Aeronautical Merit, whereas the São Paulo Branch of the Brazilian College of Surgeons awarded him the Benedito Montenegro distinction for his contributions to surgery in Brazil.
