Ruy Garcia Marques

Ruy Garcia Marques was born on February 21, 1955, in the city of Bom Jesus do Itabapoana in the State of Rio de Janeiro.

In 1978, he graduated from the State University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UERJ) Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM), after which time the young physician decided to pursue his medical residency in General Surgery at the Pedro Ernesto University Hospital (HUPE-UERJ) and received his diploma in 1981. In addition, Marques is a Brazilian College of Surgeons-certified (CBC) Specialist in General Surgery.

Other academic credentials held by Dr. Marques include a Master’s degree in Gastroenterological Surgery from the Federal Fluminense University (UFF), as well as a Ph.D. in Surgical Technique and Experimental Surgery from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). Also, the doctor enrolled at the USA Charleston-based Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) post-doctoral program, which he attended from 2002 to 2003. He focused his time there studying organ transplantation, particularly pancreas and pancreatic islet transplantation.

From January 2007 to January 2015, Dr. Marques served as President of the Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation-helmed (FAPERJ) Carlos Chagas Foundation, and in 2014, was bestowed the title of Physician of the Year from the Rio de Janeiro Medical and Surgical Society, in addition to the Professor Honoris Causa distinction awarded by the Medical School of the University of Grande Rio (Unigranrio).

Starting in 2016 and dating to today, Dr. Marques has held the position of Dean of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Moreover, he is an Associate Professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) Faculty of Medical Sciences’ Department of General Surgery, in addition to Coordinator of the Operative Technique and Experimental Surgery taught there. He further runs the aforementioned subject’s concentration area under the Postgraduate Program in Pathophysiology and Surgical Sciences, and after passing a diploma-based public admissions exam, was appointed as a Full Professor at UERJ’s Department of General Surgery – Experimental Surgery Division.  

Among the many titles and distinctions that the lauded physician and researcher holds, some include Member of the Research Ethics Committee of the State University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UERJ) university complex (HUPE); Full Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC); Full Member of the Brazilian Society for Development of Research in Surgery (Sobradpec); Full Member of the National Academy of Medicine (ANM); and Full Member of the State of Rio de Janeiro Academy of Medicine (ACAMERJ). 

Moreover, he is a Full Member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS); Advisor and Ad-hoc Reviewer for numerous Brazilian research funding agencies, such as CAPES, CNPq, and FAPERJ; Member of the Advisory Group of the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education’s (Capes) Department of Programs and Scholarships; and Associate Editor of the Brazilian Acta Cirúrgica peer-reviewed medical journal.

Dr. Ruy Garcia Marques focuses his efforts on the fields of General Surgery, Operative Technique, and Experimental Surgery and conducts extensive research within the realm of the spleen and sepsis; experimental nutrition in surgery; wound healing and extracellular matrix; diabetes mellitus; and pancreas and pancreatic islet transplantation. Finally, the acclaimed physician and scholar is a National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) level 2-certified productivity-based researcher.
