Roberto de Andrade Medronho was born on October 10, 1958, in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the State of Rio de Janeiro, to Jayr da Rocha Medronho and Neuza José de Andrade Medronho.
He decided to pursue a medical career, enrolling at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and graduating in 1982. There, he was also a monitor for the subjects of Histology, Biochemistry, Parasitology, Preventive Medicine, and Orthopedics.
For his Medical Residency, which he chose to undertake in the field of Pediatrics, Medronho worked at Rio de Janeiro’s Hospital da Lagoa, in addition to having completed another Residency, namely in Preventive and Social Medicine at the State University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UERJ) Institute for Social Medicine for the 1985-1987 term. He later earned a Master’s degree in Public Health from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in 1993, followed by a Ph.D. in the same field from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation six years later. Dr. Medronho’s area of expertise is Public Health, with a focus on Epidemiology.
Currently, Dr. Medronho holds the title of Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Faculty of Medicine’s Infectious & Parasitic Diseases Department and Coordinator of its laboratory that is tasked with conducting research in the subjects of Epidemiology of Transmissible Diseases. He was one of masterminds behind the Epidemiology Department established at the State Government Employee Hospital (HSE), which he additionally led from 1987 to 1999.
The physician and academician helmed the Department of Preventive Medicine at UFRJ’s Faculty of Medicine from 2006 to 2008, in addition to having served as a Member of the Advisory Council of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) from 2007 to 2010. Additionally, he was appointed as Dean of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UFRJ) Institute of Collective Health Studies, holding the same position from 2010 to 2011, as well as serving as Head of its Faculty of Medicine from 2011 to 2020.
When it comes to Dr. Medronho’s publications, he has penned seventy-nine articles in specialized medical journals and 128 papers in the annals of numerous events. Moreover, he has fifteen book chapters and three self-authored books under his name, in addition to holding the position of Editor-in-Chief of the Epidemiologia (“Epidemiology”) book published by the Editora Atheneu publishing house, with this work being widely used in both undergraduate and graduate health-based programs throughout the country.
In his career, the recognized academician and physician has mentored 14 Master’s final papers, 17 Ph.D. final theses and supervised four postdoctoral internships, as well as having guided sixty-seven undergraduate research internships (URI) in the fields of Public Health, Epidemiology, Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, and Probability and Statistics.
Dr. Medronho was acknowledged with the prestigious Scientist of Our State distinction granted by the Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation (FAPERJ), as well as being a Level 2-certified researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). His research line entails the study of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, focused on arboviruses and tuberculosis.
Dr. Roberto de Andrade Medronho was sworn in as a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) on August 11, 2022, during which time he shared an original essay by the name of “The Zika Epidemic and its Serious Implications for Fetuses of Infected Pregnant Women.” His inauguration ceremony took place on October 14 of that same year, at which time he was greeted by fellow peer and Academy Member Antonio Nardi.
