Jarbas Anacleto Porto was born on February 17, 1921, in Caruaru in the State of Pernambuco.
Born to Manoel Porto Filho and Auta Anacleto Porto, he completed his bachelor’s degree in medicine at the University of Brazil’s (currently, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ) College of Medicine.
Dr. Porto was a resident of the Department of Dermatology and Syphilology of the University of Michigan University Hospital. Some of the other positions he held included Associate Professor at the National School of Medicine; Venereologist at the City of Rio de Janeiro; Physician and Head of the Hospital dos Servidores do Estado (Civil Servants’ Welfare and Assistance Institute – IPASE) Study Center; Founder and Professor of the Medical Graduate School of Dermatology at the Carlos Chagas Institute and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro; and Head of the Department of Dermatology at Nossa Senhora da Saúde Hospital of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia General Hospital and the General Polyclinic of Rio de Janeiro.
Additionally, he was a Full Professor of dermatology and syphilography, as well as Vice-President of the School of Medical Sciences of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). Dr. Porto was also a Full Professor of Dermatology at the Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro-based School of Medical Sciences, and at the Faculty of Medicine of Vassouras in Valença, also in the State of Rio de Janeiro, as well as at the Souza Marques Technical-Educational Foundation.
He served tenures as an Emeritus Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Vassouras, was a member of the Rio de Janeiro Regional Medical Council, and an Honorary Member of both the Rio de Janeiro and the State of Amazonas Academies of Medicine.
Furthermore, Dr. Porto was appointed as a Life Member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the New York Academy of Sciences.
As founder of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology for the District of Rio de Janeiro, Dr. Porto devised both the society’s logo and its journal, named Rio Dermatológico. He further envisioned the First Skin Cancer Prevention Campaign, where he held the position of President in 1975.
The renowned surgeon and academician also chaired the Asociación Latinoamericana de Academias Nacionales de Medicina, España y Portugal (Latin American Association of Medical Academies – ALANAM) and hosted its private assembly in Rio de Janeiro in 1999.
To claim a Full Member position at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Porto presented a dissertation titled “Deep Erythematous Lupus: Clinical and Histopathological Aspects.” In the organization itself, he served as its Secretary-General (1987-1989), Treasurer (1989-1991), Second Vice-President (1991-1993), and Secretary-General (1995-1997). Shortly thereafter, he was elected President for the 1997-1999 term.
Jarbas Anacleto Porto passed away on September 8, 2006, in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
