Eloisa Silva Dutra de Oliveira Bonfá

A class of 1981 University of São Paulo (USP) Medical School of Ribeirão Preto (FRMRPUSP) medical graduate, Eloisa Silva Dutra de Oliveira Bonfá pursued her Residency in Internal Medicine at the same institution in 1982. The following year and up to 1986, she enrolled at the U.S. University of Cornell Hospital for Special Surgery, where she specialized in Rheumatology. There, she also worked as a Junior Faculty member until 1987. 

Upon returning to Brazil, Dr. Bonfá obtained a Doctor of Medical Sciences degree in Medicine from the University of São Paulo (USP) in 1991, and a couple of years later in 1994, successfully secured the position of Associate Professor at the same institution. In 1998 and still at USP, the physician rose to the rank of Full Member.  

Dr. Bonfá has penned 358 articles and papers in both Brazilian and foreign medical journals and has been honored with a number of distinctions throughout her remarkable career. In addition, she has mentored 14 undergraduate research internship (URI) students, 30 doctorate candidates, 13 Master’s degree students, and seven postdoctoral scholars. 

Due to her prolific scientific production, the physician was granted a Level A1 Productivity in Research scholarship – the most prestigious of its kind – from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), in addition to securing funding from other national institutions to conduct her research studies.  

As an acknowledgment for her contributions to medicine both in Brazil and abroad, Dr. Bonfá has been granted membership to multiple boards and commissions, among them the Executive Council of the Latin American Group for the Study of Lupus (GLADEL), Expert Committee of the International task force on definitions of remission in SLE (DORIS), and Managing Committee of The Lupus Academy, in addition to overseeing a research study entitled “Rituximab for Lupus Nephritis with Remission as a Goal (RING)” in Brazil. Furthermore, she holds the position of Coordinator of Centers for High-Cost Medication (CEDMAC) of the State of São Paulo.

In 2022, Dr. Bonfá became the first-ever female physician as well as rheumatologist to be appointed as Clinical Director at the University of São Paulo Hospital das Clínicas university hospital complex School of Medicine. In the same year, she was voted a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), following the approval of a dissertation named “Post COVID-19 Syndrome: An Evaluation of the Cohort with Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases Vaccinated with Coronovac (CoronavRheum)”. 

Dr. Eloisa Silva Dutra de Oliveira Bonfá was officially inducted into the ANM by Academy Member Giovanni Cerri on May 26, 2023.
