Born in Belém in the State of Pará on November 9, 1902, Carlos Cruz Lima was the son of Eládio de Amorim Lima and D. Lucinda Cruz Lima.
He studied medicine at the now defunct University of Brazil (now, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ) National College of Medicine, graduating in 1926.
In 1945, Dr. Cruz Lima secured a Full Member position at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), upon successfully submitting a dissertation called “A Study on Blood Regeneration.” He would go on to fulfill several other job titles at the board of the institution, finally being elected President for the 1965 to 1967 term.
He held the positions of Associate Professor and Full Professor of Clinical Medicine at the National College of Medicine of the now defunct University of Brazil (UFRJ). Moreover, he served both as a Head Clerk at the philanthropic Santa Casa da Misericórdia General Hospital and as President of the institution’s Medical Residency program standing committee. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Cruz Lima rose to the ranks of Dean and Medical Advisor of said philanthropic institution.
Furthermore, the physician composed the Rio de Janeiro Medical and Surgical Society, of which he also served as President; Society of Neurology, Psychiatry and Forensic Medicine; Brazilian Society of Pathology, and the Brazilian Society of Cardiology. Finally, Dr. Cruz Lima held the position of President of the Brazilian Association of Medical Leagues.
