José Luiz Gomes do Amaral

Born in the city of São Paulo on February 24, 1950, José Luiz Gomes do Amaral holds dual Brazilian and Portuguese nationalities. 

He is a registered specialist in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the State of São Paulo Regional Council of Medicine, while in Portugal he is classified as an Anesthesiologist in the North Regional Division of the country’s Order of Physicians.

Dr. Amaral is a class of 1976 Paulista School of Medicine of the Federal University of São Paulo (EPM/Unifesp) graduate, and his diploma was recognized by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon in Portugal in 2005. In 1979, the physician completed a specialization program in Anesthesiology, whereas in 2000, he obtained an Intensive Care Medicine specialist certificate. In addition, in 1983 he completed a graduate program in Anesthesiology (TSA) at the Brazilian Society of Anesthesiology (SBA). 

Since 1980 and beginning as a Collaborating Professor, Dr. Amaral has pursued an academic career at the Paulista School of Medicine of the Federal University of São Paulo (EPM/Unifesp), where he subsequently rose to the ranks of Assistant Professor, Lecturer and Associate until, in 1991, he secured the position of Full Professor of the Anesthesiology, Pain and Intensive Therapy subject taught at the aforementioned institution’s Surgery Department. 

To add to his lengthy list of prestigious titles, Dr. Amaral was awarded the position of Foreign Assistant by the Louis Pasteur University School of Medicine in Strasbourg, France, for the 1983-1984 term. In 1981, the physician completed a Master’s degree in 1981, while in 1987 he finished a Ph.D. in Vascular, Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery and Anesthesiology at EPM-UNIFESP. Three years later, in turn, Dr. Amaral was designated an Associate Professor of the Júlio de Mesquita Filho São Paulo State University’s (UNESP) Medical School (FMB). 

The esteemed physician has been a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) since 2015, was elected on October 23, 2014, and officially sworn in on April 7, 2015. He holds the same positions at São Paulo’s Academy of Medicine (since 2002), Academia Cristã de Letras (Christian Academy of Letters, since 2007), and Historical and Geographical Institute of São Paulo (IHGSP, since 2011), in addition to the distinction of National Honorary Full Member granted by the Brazilian College of Surgeons in 2013. 

Other titles amassed by Dr. Amaral include President of São Paulo’s Paulista Association of Medicine (APM) for the 1999-2002 and the 2002-2005 terms and President of the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB) for the 2005-2008 and 2008-2011 tenures. Moreover, in 2006 he founded the Portuguese-speaking Medical Community (CMLP), which he ran from 2010 to 2011, and served as President of the World Medical Association for the 2011-2012 term. 

Dr. Amaral further served as Vice-Dean at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) from 2011 to 2012, while, today, he runs the Teaching and Training Centers of both the Brazilian Society of Anesthesiology and the Brazilian Society of Intensive Care (Sobrati) at the UNIFESP Paulista School of Medicine’s (EPM) São Paulo Hospital.

Furthermore, the acclaimed doctor has served as the Superintendent of the State of São Paulo Association for the Development of Medicine (SPDM) since 2014. 
Dr. José Luiz Gomes do Amaral holds experience in medicine, particularly in the fields of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine and is a Member of the Brazilian (SBA) as well as Portuguese (SPA) societies of Anesthesiology, in addition to the Brazilian Association of Intensive Care Medicine (AMIB). Finally, the SBA established the “Doctor José Luiz Gomes do Amaral Award,” a distinction granted to the third-year specialization program student of the Brazilian Society of Anesthesiology (SBA)-accredited Teaching and Education Center (CET) who achieved the highest score in the SBA’s national admissions exam.
