João José de Carvalho

Presidente da Academia Nacional de Medicina 1833 (1st quarter)

The son of Antônio José de Carvalho and Emerenciana Joaquina de Carvalho, João José de Carvalho was born on February 24, 1806, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. He concluded his undergraduate studies in Medicine at the Paris School of Medicine in 1828, after defending a thesis titled “De l’influence du sang sur la production des maladies” (“On the Influence of Blood on the Production of Diseases).”

Dr. Carvalho became a Full Member of the Rio de Janeiro Medical Society upon submitting a dissertation titled “Considerations on Pathologic Anatomy with regard to Practical Medicine.” He was officially sworn in on June 29, 1832, during José Francisco Xavier Sigaud’s administration, under the presidency of Academy Member Agostinho Thomaz d’Aquino (Vice-President) and chaired the Rio de Janeiro Medical Society – today the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) – in the 1st quarter of 1833.

Dr. João José de Carvalho passed away on March 22, 1867.
