Alfredo do Nascimento e Silva was born in Rio de Janeiro on January 18, 1866, to Manoel Joaquim do Nascimento e Silva and Virginia Medeiros do Nascimento e Silva. He graduated in medicine from the Rio de Janeiro College of Medicine in 1888.
He worked as a Substitute Lecturer in Legal Medicine and Sanitation at the former Faculdade Livre de Ciências Jurídicas e Sociais (School of Legal and Social Sciences) in 1894 and as a Substitute Lecturer and Full Member at the Chemistry, Physics, and Natural Sciences Department of the Brazilian Political, Strategic and Defense Studies Centre in Rio de Janeiro.
Nascimento e Silva was appointed as a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) in 1892 and subsequently rose to the rank of Emeritus Member in 1929. There, he took on several roles at the institution’s board of directors, thereafter, serving as President from 1908 to 1909.
In addition, the physician was Dean at the now defunct Escola Normal do Distrito Federal (a Rio de Janeiro school for the education of teachers) in 1920, as well as a Member of numerous institutions, such as the Comissão Médico-Legista da Assistência Judiciária (Medical Examiner Commission of the Legal Assistance office) in 1899; the Advisory Board of the Brazilian League against Tuberculosis, of which he was also President (1900); and the Brazilian League against Tuberculosis at the Instituto de Docentes Militares (Institute of Military Educators) and the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute (IHGB).
Dr. Alfredo do Nascimento e Silva passed away on March 6, 1951.
